The Timbavati Association was formed in 1956 by a group of conservation minded landowners with the aim to reclaim the land for the benefit of all. They had come together after witnessing the degradation of a once pristine wilderness area. Insensitive land use (primarily crop and cattle farming) had caused soil erosion and destruction of indigenous plant species, as well as the natural water sources being rerouted thus impacting the ecology of the area. As a result, much of the wildlife common to the area was lost. In returning the reserve to its natural glory & with the return of all the major game species, a decision was made in 1993 to remove the fences between the Kruger National Park and the Timbavati Reserve to encourage natural species migration. Pit-Track K9 Conservation have taken over the management and operations of the K9 function at the main entrances into the APNR and Greater Kruger Area.
